Honorable Mention
I am still resting from my trip
Charles Levenstein

I am still resting from my trip.
The quiet of morning in my kitchen,
coffee from the French white mugs,
tiny cheese sandwiches toasted brittle and salty,
half-a-dozen grape tomatoes,
more coffee, only the click of clocks
to mark the time.

Two jade plants pose in the window,
watch the sun slowly subdue shadows;
snow sits on the rooftops and in the yards
but seems content to stay sequestered.
Even the bare tree, crows’ roost,
is silent, residents gone for breakfast.

E. is off to the courthouse where she decides
matters of life and death; she’ll call
in a while to determine my plans.
I have none, I perch on a stool
in a warm house, put aside
the bad habit of despair.
